All working processed, where a high gloss can be achieved, is called polishing.
When polishing the abrasion is marginally lesser compared to lapping, because the grain ingresses into the polishing medium carrier, respectively the polishing pad.
Design of a polishing pad
A polishing pad is a complex composition of several material layers where each layer has an individual function. Some pads have up to 5 different layers. The active and visible part of the polishing pad is the first criterium of choice, but the other parameter, defined by each layer can technically deviate and have a direct effect on the function of the polishing pad:
- A more or less permeable layer
- A more or less thick glue layer with a more or less adhesive strength
- A more or less stiff carrier
